The problem

Bookkeeping shouldn't feel like this.

01

The spreadsheet that grew

Tabs for every month, formulas nobody trusts, and a year-end scramble to make it add up.

02

Software built for someone else

Payroll, inventory, multi-entity consolidation, and a monthly bill, when all you needed was clean books.

03

The cloud you didn't ask for

Your finances on someone else's server, behind a login, at a price that goes up every year.

The approach

Just enough structure. Not too much.

Three things make books make sense: accounts (where the money sits), categories (what it was for) and payees (who you paid, or who paid you). LedgerCaddy gives you those, then gets out of the way. Record what happened, tick it off against your bank statement, and the reports are simply there.

No accounting degree required. A built-in guide walks every screen, and the Sample Book lets you try everything before you touch your own numbers.

The New Expense entry form: type, date, payee, account, category, amount with tax, memo and attachments
Recording an expense. Payee remembered, tax worked out, receipt attached.
How it works

Four habits. That's the whole system.

01

Record

Income and expenses in seconds. Payees and tax remembered for you.

02

Organize

Accounts, categories and payees keep everything in its place.

03

Review

See where the money goes. Reconcile, which just means checking your entries against the bank statement.

04

Report

Professional reports whenever you need them: print, PDF or CSV.

Reports

Professional reports for you and your accountant.

These are real pages from the Sample Book, exactly as LedgerCaddy prints them. Every report also exports to PDF and CSV.

The Period Pack

One button assembles the reports your accountant asks for into a single PDF: the Income and Expense Summary, Account Balances, the Tax Summary and the full Transaction Listing, all for the same period, all from the same books.

Send one file. Keep a copy. Done.

Filter any report by date, account, category, payee or status. Sort by any column. Pin the ones you run every month.

What you get

By the end of your first month:

Is it for you?

Honest fit, both ways.

LedgerCaddy is for you if…

  • You run a small business, rental property, club, nonprofit or freelance practice
  • You want great records and professional reports without enterprise features
  • You would rather own your software than rent it
  • You want your books on your Mac, not in someone's cloud
  • You are moving on from a spreadsheet

It is not for you if…

  • You need payroll, inventory or invoicing built in
  • You need several people editing the same books at once from different places
  • You need multi-entity consolidation or audit-grade controls
  • You want your bank to feed transactions automatically

About

Made by one person, in Canada, for people like you.

I'm Rick Thompson. I run a small company, DART Management Inc., and LedgerCaddy started as the bookkeeping app I wanted for my own records: something that kept great books and produced reports my accountant would actually use, without a subscription, a login, or a hundred features I would never touch.

It is built the way I think small-business software should be built. Your books are one file on your Mac, in a standard SQLite format, so they are never trapped. You buy it once. And when you email support, you reach the person who wrote it.

Questions

Things people ask.

Is it really not a subscription?

Really. $50 USD buys LedgerCaddy outright with 12 months of updates. After that, $20 USD a year is optional. Skip it and the version you have keeps working forever.

Where is my data?

In one file on your Mac, wherever you choose to keep it. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account. Back it up like any other document; LedgerCaddy also keeps automatic backups.

Can I bring in my existing records?

Yes. Import a CSV export from your spreadsheet or bank, or a backup from Easy Books, and LedgerCaddy walks you through matching accounts and categories.

Will my accountant be happy?

That is the point. The Period Pack assembles the year-end reports accountants ask for into one PDF, and every report also exports to CSV.

Which Macs does it run on?

Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 11 or later. It is a native Mac app, not a web page in a window.

More answers, system requirements and how the licence works are on the Support page.
